This weekend, my husband and I are in Pendleton, Oregon. We drove in last night, and today, he’s spending the day playing in a big poker tournament at the casino, and I spent the day walking around downtown Pendleton.
Pendleton is a very history-rich area. It was one of the stops along the Oregon Trail, and the downtown makes you feel like you stepped back in time to the wild west. I started the morning by attending a free art class at a local art center, and from there, based on the recommendation of the locals I met in the class, I had lunch at a local coffee shop, and then wandered around downtown.
The downtown area was about 4 or 5 blocks long and was filled with western stores, restaurants, antique stores, a general store, a used book store and even the oldest JC Pennies still operating in it’s original location. I stepped inside and it was soooo tiny with low ceilings- definitely different than the JC Pennies I’m used to!
My favorite part was all the old signs- for a vintage sign buff like myself it really was a mecca of signage!
